South African Safari Rally
Sunday, 18 May Scrutineering of all race vehicles
Scrutineering day at a World Rally-Raid Championship event is a critical pre-race inspection where officials ensure that all vehicles—both motorbikes and cars—comply with safety and technical regulations.
It takes place before the race begins and is mandatory for all competitors. The process starts with competitors arriving at the scrutineering area, often in a large tent or a designated space within the bivouac (the race’s central hub). Riders and drivers must present their vehicles along with essential documentation, including licenses, insurance, and race entries. Officials meticulously check safety gear such as helmets, fireproof suits, and navigation equipment.
For motorbikes, scrutineers inspect elements like the fuel system, GPS trackers, engine seals, and protective equipment.
For cars, they check roll cages, fire extinguishers, seatbelts, and suspension components. Each vehicle must meet strict FIA (for cars) and FIM (for bikes) standards. Once a vehicle passes, it receives an official sticker allowing it to race. If it fails, the competitor must fix the issue before the deadline. Scrutineering ensures that all machines are safe and fair, preventing mechanical advantages or rule violations. It’s an intense but necessary process before the adventure of the rally begins.
