Event Description
The Sigade Umzila Maskandi Annual Festival is a groundbreaking cultural and music festival dedicated exclusively to the Maskandi music genre. Slated to be the first of its kind in Johannesburg, South Africa, the festival aims to celebrate, preserve, and elevate this rich, traditional sound to national and international audiences. Hosted at the iconic Ellis Park Stadium. Audiences can expect performances from Khuzani, Mthandeni, Limit, Menzi, Lwa Ndlunkulu, Umafikizolo, Mjolisi and Gatsheni with more surprise acts and entertainment to be announced as we get closer to the day of the event. The event will be hosted by radio and social media sensation Penny Ntuli.
About Maskandi
Music Maskandi is a traditional form of Zulu folk music that originated in the rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Characterized by its storytelling lyrics, intricate guitar riffs, and rhythmic beats, Maskandi reflects the lived experiences, struggles, and spiritual journeys of its people. Often described as the “Zulu blues,” the genre has evolved over time, incorporating modern instruments and sounds while remaining deeply rooted in indigenous tradition. Artists like Phuzekhemisi, Ihashi Elimhlophe, and Bhekumuzi Luthuli have brought Maskandi into national consciousness, yet the genre remains underrepresented in mainstream South African entertainment. Led by popular superstars Khuzani, Mthandeni, Limit, Menzi, Mjolisi, Gatsheni and the music has transcended becoming popular on social media rivaling Amapiano with streams and overall engagement. It is no longer hostel, taxi rank or KZN music it has reached urban audiences. The SIGADE UMZILA MASKANDI ANNUAL FESTIVAL aims to change that narrative—giving this music a national stage and the recognition it deserves right at the epicenter of South Africa’s economic hub Johannesburg. Going forward SUMAF would like to strategically place maskandi artists with commercial and brand opportunities.
